Eco efficiency
Eco-efficiency is a management approach which aims to achieve “more with less” by making efficiency improvements within existing processes. It is also about finding innovative approaches to producing more value with less input of energy and material, and with reduced emissions.
Eco-efficiency involves:
Reducing the material and energy intensity of goods and services
Increasing the service intensity of goods and services
Reducing toxic dispersion
Enhancing material recyclability
Maximizing sustainable use of renewable resources
Increasing material / product durability
Increasing service intensity
Through:
1. Redesigning products:
Facilitating product disassembly, reducing material intensity, and promoting product recyclability and reuse
2. Re-engineering processes:
Improving monitoring and management practices, changing existing technology, operating procedures and making changes to raw material inputs
3 Re-valorizing by-products:
Turning waste into a commercially valuable resource for other processes
4. Rethinking markets:
Meeting customer needs in a less material and energy-intensive manner, for example by providing an equivalent service to replace the product.
